Now that this South Korean beauty craze has hit the world beauty market, it’s everywhere and no matter how much you cringe, as far as my experience is concerned… it’s totally worth the hype! I have been using quite a few products with snail slime in them and I am totally blown away by the results and this ingredient is going to be in my skin routine in future as well. I was introduced to snail slime by my sister and I can’t thank her enough for this! It helped me heal my skin when it needed the most. Even though snail slime has been in the market for quite a while now… this trend hasn’t hit India yet. And I cannot disagree that we Indians are far far behind the world when it comes to beauty and skin care. Though the trend of ‘taking care of your skin’ is picking up pace but it’s still got a long long way to go! However, there are lots of online shops who are getting the latest skin care ranges and it seems more and more people have taken interest in self-care. So…
What is snail slime and what makes it so special?
Yes, it’s the slimy and shiny trail that is left behind from snails and slugs. This slime you see is over 90% water and the rest is made up of some powerful beauty boosting natural components. This slime/mucus is fully packed with naturally occurring –
- UV protection
- Anti – inflammatory allantois
- Collagen and elastin
- Hyaluronic acid and Glycolic acid
- Natural antimicrobials
That is quite a list for your skin right?! How can say NO to such power packed ingredients for your skin.
Is it really good for your skin?
If I had to give a simple answer.. it would be a big YES!
The slime excreted by snails (known as snail mucin) helps them to heal cuts and protect against bacteria and UV rays. It’s rich in proteins, hyaluronic acid, anti-microbials, and copper peptides, which (for human use) help to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, protect from free radicals, soothe inflammation, repair damaged tissues, and improve hydration – leading to clearer, brighter, smoother skin.
People from around the world have been using snail slime for years !
Decades ago in France, it was seen that the farmers who handled snails and slugs for escargot had really smooth and gorgeous skin. These farmers also noticed that handling their slimy livestock led to softer hands and their cuts healed more quickly! It is even said that in ancient Greece famous physician Hippocrates reportedly prescribed crushed snails and sour milk to cure inflammation. So the use of snail slime for beauty and anti-aging dates back hundreds of years! And now it has been quite a while that snail slime is being used in Asian beauty products, mainly Korean masks and cream.
How is snail slime extracted?
Well lets start here with the good news… No snail is harmed or killed in this process! I went through a lot of articles just to find out if these poor animals are killed or these snail slime products and I won’t say the answer to my question is totally clear but I did find a few related articles.
‘After realizing that snail slime extraction methods used by modern industry are damaging and killing snails, Simone Sampò spent nine years exploring the creation of a machine capable of extracting abundant quantities of saliva without killing the snails. In fact, it seems that they are enjoying this as it is probably the first spa for snails.‘
‘There are ways to collect mucin but the popular technique usually involve leaving snails in dark rooms and having them crawl on a mesh like surface and then collecting the slime later. Brands like Mizon and CosRx use this method for the slime collection.’
There is something called Snail Facial –
The snails which are carefully selected from organic snail breeders are living the life!! Their only work is to munch on organic veggies and roam around your face during a facial. Ridiculous as it may sound but this facial has been called the fountain of youth!
The science of snail slime –
Research reveals that there are various effects on skin including the proliferation of fibroblasts, simulation of new collagen and elastin fibres, and increased production of fibronectin proteins … to mention a few.
Chemically speaking, snail slime is a mixture of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, glycopretein enzymes, hyaluronic acid, copper petides, antimicrobial peptides and trace elements that include copper, zinc and iron.
Now after all that information the question still lies… are you ready to use snail slime on your face?? I know it may sound gross to many but I have incorporated it in my skin routine and with the results… no regrets!!
