Do Not Throw Away Those Orange Peel Next Time.

Honestly I owe my healthy skin and hair to my mom a lot! Now when I sit back and think, she had the most amazing ideas when it came to ‘organic beauty’. Since my childhood days I have always seen mom using products from the kitchen to make the most effective skin and hair care product and I still see their effects!

So no matter what routine I follow for my skin and no matter how innovative and expensive product I use for my skin and hair, I shall always go back to the kitchen for the most effective cure for all my skin, hair and health problems.

One such product happens to be ‘Orange Peel’! I have never seen my mom throw away these peels and I do the same. She always made the most amazing face masks with whatever she found in the kitchen and orange peel was always one of the ingredients. And not only for face masks, she made us have dried orange peel powder in the morning as well… and I hated that! It tasted like orange gone bitter. And today when I look at the benefits it has I can only thank mom for giving me the best!

How to store orange peel?

Oranges are a winter fruit and the best oranges are found during November to February.  So its wise to store the peel of the oranges that you have.

What I do – I just keep all the orange peel in a net container which can allow an ample amount of sunlight to enter the container. **I use a container and do not keep in open vessel in the sun, to avoid as much dust as I can because I shall also be consuming the peel too.

I keep the peels in the sun every day till it dries up and becomes hard enough to be powdered in a mixer grinder. And the orange peel powder can be stored in an air tight container for as long as six months. ** You can also keep the dried peels as it is without making a powder and use it.

So, the next time do not throw away those orange peels as they’re packed with beneficial compounds and nutrients that can do your body some extra good. Like most fruits, oranges are full of nutrients and enzymes that help our bodies perform better. Orange peels are rich in flavours, powerful antioxidants that help reduce oxidative damage and fight free radicals.

How to put use of orange peel in different ways

– For skin –

I generally use orange peel powder in my face packs and once a while I make body packs too. I use it in a lot of different packs but if I had to choose one my favorite would be –

Mix  : one part of curd + 2 tbsp gram flour + 1 tbsp orange peel powder + a few drops of  rose-water.

Mix these to make a thick paste and if it becomes too thick dilute it with rose-water and apply evenly on your face and neck and let it dry. Once the pack dries on your face wet it with cold water and scrub it off by massaging in circular motion. After washing your face clean apply a good toner and some moisturizer.

 – For Hair –

I use orange peel powder once a while to condition my hair and it works amazingly well! For hair however its good to use fresh peel but I have also tried using powdered peel the same way and I did not find much difference.

Mix : One part of curd + Juice of half a lemon + 1 tbsp orange peel.

Apply this mixture on your scalp and hair and keep it for 20 mins. And rise it with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water.

 – For Health Benefits –

    • Make orange peel tea
        1. If you are using fresh orange peels, chop them into ¼ inch sized pieces
        1. If you are using dried orange peels, crush them a little with a mortar and pestle
        1. Place chopped or crushed orange peels and water into a pot with a lid on it. I use stainless steel Revere pots; glass and enamel pots also work well
        1. Bring water and herbs to a boil and then immediately turn off the fire
        1. Let orange peels steep for one hour
        1. Using a metal strainer, remove the herbs from the tea and pour the tea into a teacup or pitcher
      1. Drink warm or at room temperature
  • Other ways of consuming orange peel –                                                                                            1.Grate the peels, using a grater, sharp knife, zester or vegetable peeler. Use the grated peel in your food by tossing it into a homemade batch of trail mix; adding it to a salad or desert; sneaking it into a smoothie; sprinkling it into a drink; dropping it into a bowl of oatmeal; or baking it into a cakes, cookies, brownies and pies.

2.Steep the peels in a hot cup of tea. Add a dash of ginger and honey to fight cough.

3.Have pop in a tsp of orange peel powder with warm water in the morning.

To conclude with – While orange peels are edible, they are not nearly as sweet or juicy as the pulp. If you do eat the peel, you’ll get a good amount of nutrients. Orange peel actually has more fiber then the fruit inside contains. It also has flavonoids in it that contain nutritious benefits.

So the next time make sure to make the full use of those orange peels!

Guys do lemme know if you have any more awesome ideas with orange peels I would love to know myself! 🙂 <3

Till next time…  Keep Glowing! <3

If a meal was skipped in our household, we drank orange peel tea to “break the gas” before consuming our meals. It works every time.
