Grow this wonder spice in your garden!

One of the childhood memories I have is, mom running after me to feed me a spoonful of mashed raw tumeric and neem in the morning. I used to curse mom for making me go through the torture every morning! haha! But today its one habit I proudly tell people I have and credit my good skin and hair to. But then every Indian mother and grandmother swears by the benefits of tumeric.

In India tumeric is considered as healer’s spice and its use dates back to nearly 4000 years to the Vedic culture. There is hardly any Indian dish – vegetarian or non-vegetarian in which we don’t use tumeric. Its one of the most common and one of the most important spice in our kitchen. It’s not just a common spice to use in kitchen but there are also a number of other uses and its truly magical how it magically mends everything it touches.

Tumeric is used as a coloring agent and is considered auspicious in Indian households and is also used in Indian traditional medicine systems. Tumeric has long been used for its digestive, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. It’s also a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent.

While we all know the uses of Tumeric as a spice… this post is all about the raw tumeric you can grow in your kitchen garden.

In Recipes ( Kitchen uses)

Haldi ka achaar (Tumeric Pickle) :

Ingredients —

250 gms fresh turmeric
20 gms mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
10 gms fenugreek (methi) seeds
20 gms fennel seeds (saunf)
20 gms chilli powder
1 tsp asafoetida
3 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp oil
salt to taste

Method — Wash the haldi and keep it for drying. Peel off the skin from haldi and cut it into small julienne strips. Now in a pan dry roast the mustard seeds, fennel seeds and Fenugreek Seeds for 2-3 minutes and after roasting, coarsely grind the mixture. Now in a bowl mix the haldi with this mixture. Add salt as per your taste. Preferably around 30 gm. In another pan take some oil and make a tempering using mustard seeds and asafoetida. Add the tempering to the bowl and mix well and add the lemon juice to the mixture. Keep this mix in a container for 2-3 days. After 2-3 days your Haldi ka Achar is ready to eat.

Haldi ki sabzi (Veggies with Tumeric) :

Ingredients —

250 gms fresh turmeric, peeled , washed and grated.
1 cup chopped cauliflower
1 cup green peas
2 red chillies
2 green chillies
1 inch piece ginger , peeled and chopped
A handful chopped coriander
1 tsp chilli powder
2 tsp coriander (dhania) powder
salt to taste
1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
a pinch of asafoetida (hing)
2 cups curd
3/4 cup ghee
water as required

Method — Combine chilli powder, coriander powder, salt and curds in a deep bowl and whip it. See that no lumps form and keep aside. Heat some ghee in a non-stick pan, add the cauliflower and saute until it is soft, remove from the pan and keep it aside. In the same pan add the green peas and saute for another 3-4 minutes. Remove from the pan and keep it aside. In the same pan add more ghee when it is hot add asafoetida and cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle add red and green chillies fry for a minute. Add the turmeric and saute until it becomes golden or dark in colour, while stirring continuously. (if not properly fried it will give bitter taste). Now add the curd mixture and ginger and cook till the ghee separates,while stirring continuously. Add some water and then add cooked cauliflower and green peas and cook for another 10 minutes. Serve hot garnished with coriander.

Tumeric milk/Golden milk/Haldi wala doodh

There are a number of ways to make haldi doodh but I shall tell you the way my grand mother used to make for me 🙂

1 glass of haldi doodh — Make a paste of raw tumeric. Heat 1 glass milk in a saucepan and add cloves and cardamom and keep stirring for 4 to 5 mins. Now add in 1 tsp honey and 2 to 3 drops of vanilla extract, keep stirring. Whisk in 1 tsp of the haldi mixture and keep the milk in low flame for 3 -4 mins till the flavours blend in. Strain the milk through strainer and its ready to have.

Haldi doodh is best to have at night before bed and has numerous health benefits.

Tumeric Tea( Haldi wali chai)

Boil 4 cups of water and one teaspoon of tumeric paste and put it on simmer for 10 minutes.Strain the tea into a cup and add 1 tsp honey. Tea is ready.

Tumeric from my garden

I am a lazy person when it comes to making a lot of preparation for my skin and hair treatments and so I chose the easiest and simplest methods that my mom used for me. One advise I can give you on using Tumeric for your skin, hair and for your health is to have the way my mom gave me in the morning before having breakfast – mix 1 tsp raw tumeric paste with a few drops of honey and 1 neem leaf and have it with warm water.

    Thanks for this post. Didn’t know we could make turmeric pickle or sabji. Will trying making some for myself. My yoga coach has been constantly asking me to add haldi ka doodh in my routine. I haven’t managed to implement it yet! :/

    A very informative post on turmeric. We used to add turmeric and pepper to boiling milk and drink at night when you have cold and throat infection. It soothes the throat.
